  1. How long have you been on DeviantArt?  For 4 years.

  2. . What does your username mean? I wanted to join because of friends I knew from a gaming website. I wanted to include something artsy in my username and pick a name which my gamer friends would recognize as my old game character, so I chose dandy for my game character (Miss Dandyfish) and thought of words that sounded like art and then catastrophe came to mind; so, my username means game, art and a bit of creative chaos. :D

  3. Describe yourself in three words. Over-thinking shutterbug.

  4. Are you left or right handed? Right, but a tad left-handed too.

  5. What was your first deviation? The one of the butterfly on the tree, I guess.  camouflaged butterfly by dandy-cARTastrophe

  11. If you could meet anyone on DeviantArt in person, who would it be? The above mentioned gamer group and my beloved friends from Canada MorningIrbis and Thomas-Koidhis.

  12. How has a fellow deviant impacted your life? My two Canadian friends are my soulmates. They give me comfort, joy, love and support.

  13. What are your preferred tools to create art? My cameras.

Dear friends, fellow artists and watchers,
(this will be lengthy; I hope you bear with me)
yesterday I had an interesting debate about art posted in social media and giving credit. The person I talked to had a completely different approach to the subject which made me wonder: is this a generation thing, a question of individual experience or are artists in general a lot more strict about posting/sharing their artwork?

This concerns me personally and I guess that makes me pretty uptight about the topic. I have an opinion but I see where aspects might get fuzzy. For me, this is hard to judge.

Since I am asking for your spontaneous reaction, I will skip some of the many details. However, I will elaborate more clearly if necessary.

Please imagine the following situation:
a friend of yours (whom you know in real life and see daily) asked you to design art for him/her. The friend of yours is a fair bit older/younger than you, a different generation. Both of you agreed that the cooperation and all resulting artwork would be paid by your friend.
Among other things, you made some business cards. He/she liked and kept them but didn't pay them yet. He/she wanted to post them on a social media website and uploaded some pictures taken with a cellphone camera. You offered the actual files (better quality). Your friend posted them (publicly), not saying they were your artwork.
You added the information yourself, but some days after the info was deleted. You asked your friend if he/she knew anything about it, he/she said no.
In the weeks after, you kept posting the info about who made the business cards and noticing it  was deleted again, your friend stating every time that he/she didn't do it. Some time after, you found out that your friend obviously blocked you on that social media website. You confronted your friend with it, he/she saying again that he/she had nothing to do with it and it might be some technical issue...

You wait some more and ask your friend again to please give credit since you made the business cards and you can't add the info yourself (because of being blocked). He/she reacts by saying he will delete the files. You say that there is no need, he/she should just mention your name. Your friend then states that logos (the business cards were based on a logo you also made) don't feature credit/signatures. You insist on giving credit. Your friend repeats that he/she will delete the files and does not care about social media anyway. You voice your amazement. He/she then demands that you should show him a logo with credit info/artist signature in it. You state that your worry is NOT about the logo but the sharing/posting of your art material. Your friend says he/she does not want a dispute over it. And that he/she will delete the files. You ask him/her to wait and think about it. Your friend says that deleting isn't a problem and repeats that he/she does not want to fight over it. You say you don't want a fight either, just mutual understanding. You state that artists tend to give each other credit, e.g. photographers mention their models and so on. Your friend replies that yes, credit will be given on his/her website and on merchandise items, but not that social media website. You say that he/she published the business card images you created. He/she insists that he/she didn't publish your photos. You say that he/she published your work (the files are not photos, but your artwork all the same). Your friend repeats again that he/she prefers to delete the images because then things would calm down. And that he/she just published business cards, nothing else. You state that the business cards are YOUR work, period. And that he/she obviously has a much more casual attitude than you. Your friend then proceeds by asking if you ever saw a business card with credit info on it. Stating that he/she hasn't ever seen such a thing, he/she knows that of course, credit is given on websites. You say again that the point isn't the credit being directly included on the art items but on the website they were posted on! And that you as an artist don't have such a relaxed attitude. But by all means, if your friend values your work, he/she should not delete the images. Your friend says that it doesn't have anything to do with being relaxed. Then he/she asks which images, saying that he/she did NOT publish any image of yours. And that he/she will delete it later on. You reply that you both mean the same thing but keep talking past each other and that you hope that the images won't be deleted. No further reaction from your friend.

Questions:
When does artwork stop being yours, when does it start being owned by somebody else?
(except when art has been paid for)
How do you feel about images of artwork - are they less creditworthy than the actual artwork?
Are social media websites less "public" than other websites?
Is it okay to not give credit to a person you plan to give credit to in the future?

...
To those who read it all and will comment - thank you!
Note that I am sure the friend didn't mean any harm. So, theft or infringement is out of question.

Looking forward to reading your thoughts about this.

a few news

5 min read

Hello dear friends and watchers,

I have some news and figured you would like to hear them:
- the crystal orb I ordered for photography has arrived and I already tried some shots with it but still have to train my timing skills and patience (lol)
- my new camera (Panasonic DMC TZ61) is a delight and I am toying around with it very often
- I have been sorta passive during the dismal winter days but now that spring is just around the corner I will continue my forays at the nearby park and the zoo
- sadly, I didn't succeed in taking new close-ups of snowflakes; mainly because we didn't have that much snow and when we had it, I had no proper macro camera....I will try again next winter :D
- my photos of water drops have received quite some attention recently; obviously I still need to train my aiming and timing but I think I made some progress all the same :)
- I have a huge load of older photos (meaning those dating back to last summer) which I still need to transfer and upload; lamentably, they are all stored on the external harddrive the flash drive port of which broke off recently (yeah, it toppled over with the cable plugged in and that was it - broken port, darn it) and I cannot access them atm till the harddrive is fixed (and if I am very unlucky, then the files will be lost but currently, I assume the problem is just mechanical, not software- or data-related); BUT, to give you something fresh to feast your eyes on, I will continue a bit in an anti-chronological sharing order and upload the most recent shots (which I stored on a new flash drive stick, to make sure)...I hope you will like them!
- Plus, I solved some of the issues of last year and while things aren't totally back to normal (or relaxing) yet I am still determined to make some helpful changes (regarding my life, the people I work with,...). I will let you know in more detail once the changes have some effect.

In the meantime - be free and live prosper!

Greetings, all my dear friends and watchers,

I wish you all a happy, healthy and positively suprising new year!

I am looking forward to seeing more of your work and to sharing mine with you.
I am excited to spend a good part of January away from my current home. I wouldn't call it a holiday since I have some serious matters to take care of (including caring for my family, some of which are coping with illness, surgeries and stays at the hospital). But hopefully, when all is settled and arranged, I will get a few moments of quiet and peace and photography...

I have to get myself a new small digital camera since my Panasonic is beyond repair. The lens is too damaged and a new one costs nearly as much as a brandnew camera. Which is why I am currently saving for a better type than the last one.
Till I have that new camera as replacement for my former Panasonic Lumix, I will have to make do with my Nikon (which serves me well but sadly not for macro shots) and my cell phone camera (which might be able to capture some macro, but certainly not as closely as the Panasonic did).

I have had some bad luck during the past months. Health and finances-related. Emotional too to some degree, because mostly resulting from the aforementioned. I don't intend to complain. I believe that the more we face, the stronger we become. So, while I do wish that this year will be more fortunate I am aware that it is also a question of what I make of it.

So, here is to courage and hope...and knowing who you are and what makes you happy. :blowkiss:
Best to all of you,
~dandy/Kat

Hi dears,
I made a major decision. Since I have been coping with some tough bits and ends recently in the financial department, my rational unit decided I might as well offer some of my photos as prints. Previously, I was a bit reluctant to try that, especially since I had no idea if people would want to seize on that offer or not. By now I believe I have been shown enough trust, appreciation and interest in my work by my kind fellow dA members that I can take the next step and start selling my art officially. :eager: I will go through my entire gallery during the next days and weeks and try to decide which photos to sell - since I have so many. If I end up NOT putting a photo for sale which you would love to buy a print of, just toss me a message and I will put it up as well. Thank you for your support and for reading this journal.  :happybounce:

Humbly and hopefully, your most grateful
Kat :meow:
